USING YOUR SUPER FOR SURGERY

Yes — you can use your super for surgery.

The ATO runs a program called compassionate release of super. It applies when your surgery has a medical basis — think skin removal after weight loss, breast reduction, or corrective surgery. Surgery in Thailand qualifies too. Well-prepared applications are routinely approved within 14 days.

Who qualifies

Your surgery qualifies when your doctors confirm it's needed to treat a life-threatening illness or injury, ease acute or chronic pain, or ease acute or chronic mental illness — and that it isn't readily available through the public health system.

This covers more plastic surgery than most people expect. Chronic pain counts. Rashes and infections from excess skin count. So do documented impacts on your mental wellbeing. Two Australian-registered doctors sign the reports — usually your GP plus a specialist — and your surgeon's signed letter explaining the medical need supports their assessment.

Purely cosmetic goals with no medical basis aren't covered. In that case, a payment plan is usually the better route — we'll guide you honestly either way.

How it works with Beauty Butler

From your quote to the ATO's approval, the process is simpler than it sounds. We assist with the paperwork at every step.

Step 01

Free consultation and quote

We confirm your procedure and prepare your fixed, all-inclusive quote — itemised and in Australian dollars, the exact format the ATO requires.

Step 02

Confirm your surgery

You secure your surgeon and surgery date with the reservation deposit, just like every Beauty Butler booking.

Step 03

We prepare the paperwork

After your deposit, we prepare the official ATO report forms pre-filled with your treatment details for your doctors to review and sign, and a signed letter from your surgeon explaining why you need the procedure.

Step 04

Your doctors complete their reports

Your GP and a specialist complete the ATO's forms, based on their own assessment of your case.

Step 05

Apply through myGov

Attach the reports and your quote in ATO online services. Most patients finish this in under an hour.

Approval and payout

Funds arrive before your balance is due

The ATO normally decides within 14 days. Your fund then pays the money to your account, usually within about a week — comfortably before your balance is due two weeks pre-surgery.

What we prepare for your application

The ATO checks documentation carefully — complete, accurate paperwork is what gets approved smoothly. We prepare it all, free of charge:

✓ Itemised, all-inclusive quote in AUD

✓ Signed surgeon's letter on your medical need

✓ Complete treatment plan with dates

✓ Board-certified surgeon credentials

✓ JCI-accredited hospital details

✓ ATO report forms pre-filled for your doctors

✓ Guidance through the myGov application

✓ No fees for any of it

Good to know

The practical details, in plain terms.

Tax on the released amount

Under 60, your fund typically holds back around 22% of the taxable amount. Over 60, it's generally tax-free. We help you size the application accordingly.

Timing

The ATO normally decides online applications within 14 days. Start soon after confirming your surgery and the timing is comfortable.

Thailand works in your favour

The same surgery costs a fraction of the Australian price here. So you take far less out of your super, and your retirement savings feel it far less. For personal guidance, speak to your super fund or a licensed financial adviser.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what Australian patients ask us most.

Quick answers

— Do I repay the money? No — it's your own super, not a loan.

— How long does approval take? Normally 14 days, plus about a week for payout.

— Is there a cap? No fixed cap — the ATO releases what your unpaid, itemised quote needs.

— Can it cover surgery in Thailand? Yes — your GP notes why you're not having the treatment in Australia.

— What documents do I need? Two reports from Australian-registered doctors, our itemised quote, and a signed letter from your surgeon.

— What if I don't qualify? A payment plan is usually the better route — we'll guide you honestly.
