Blepharoplasty in Thailand: Why More Patients Are Choosing It Before a Facelift

Why eyelid surgery is increasingly the first procedure international patients choose in Thailand, and what the recovery actually looks like.

Ask most people what ages a face first, and they will point to the jawline or the neck. Ask a surgeon, and many will point to the eyes. Heavy upper lids and puffiness under the eyes are often the first thing people notice, well before the lower face shows any real sagging. That is a large part of why blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery, has quietly become one of the most requested procedures among international patients traveling to Thailand, often before they ever consider a facelift.

This guide covers what blepharoplasty actually involves, why it is increasingly a first step rather than an afterthought, and what to expect if you are considering it.

What Blepharoplasty Actually Treats

Upper blepharoplasty removes excess skin and, where needed, fat from the upper eyelid, correcting the heavy, hooded look that can make the eyes appear tired or smaller than they are. Lower blepharoplasty addresses puffiness, under-eye bags, and looseness in the lower lid, correcting a permanently tired appearance that no amount of sleep fixes.

Many patients need only one of the two. Some need both. Your surgeon will assess your upper and lower lids separately, because aging rarely affects them at the same pace.

Why It Has Become the Quiet Favourite for Surgery Travellers

A few reasons keep coming up in patient consultations.

The recovery is short compared to most facial procedures, which makes it easier to fit into a single trip. The visible result is significant relative to how contained the procedure is, since the eyes carry a disproportionate amount of how tired or refreshed a face reads. And it is often the first sign of aging patients notice in themselves, well before jowls or neck skin become a concern, which naturally makes it the first procedure they look into.

This is also why blepharoplasty frequently comes before a facelift rather than alongside or after one. Patients address the eyes first, live with the result for a few years, and consider a facelift later once the lower face genuinely needs it, rather than committing to a larger procedure before it is necessary.

What the Procedure Involves

Blepharoplasty is typically performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, or general anaesthesia if combined with other procedures. Incisions for upper eyelid surgery are hidden in the natural eyelid crease. Lower eyelid incisions are placed just below the lash line or inside the lower lid, depending on what needs correcting.

The procedure itself usually takes one to two hours for both upper and lower lids combined.

Recovery Timeline

Bruising and swelling are most noticeable in the first three to five days. Many patients feel comfortable in public, with sunglasses, by day five to seven. Stitches, where used, are typically removed around day seven. Most patients can safely fly home seven to ten days after surgery, depending on their surgeon's assessment at the follow-up appointment.

Full settling of the eye area can take a few more weeks, but the visible improvement is usually apparent well before that point.

Planning Your Trip

Most patients allocate seven to ten days in Bangkok for blepharoplasty alone. This covers a pre-op consultation, the procedure, and enough recovery time for your surgeon to confirm you are ready to fly. Patients often combine this with a shorter, calmer trip than they would plan for a full facelift, since the procedure and recovery window are both more contained.

Bring sunglasses. Plan quiet days rather than sightseeing during the first week. And keep your follow-up appointment fixed in your schedule rather than treating it as optional.
